Restored Satyajit Ray Masterpiece, Funded by Golden Globe Foundation, Premieres at Cannes

The restoration premiere of Satyajit Ray’s cinematic masterpiece Aranyer Din Ratri took place last night at the Festival de Cannes.

An esteemed gathering of film luminaries walked the red carpet ahead of the screening, including acclaimed filmmaker and Film Foundation board member Wes Anderson, actresses Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal, Film Heritage Foundation Director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, Margaret Bodde of The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project, and Peter Becker and Fumiko Takagi of The Criterion Collection/Janus Films. The delegation was warmly received by Thierry Frémaux, Director of the Cannes Film Festival, at the top of the festival’s iconic staircase.

Among those in attendance were Academy Award–winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores PerrosThe Revenant) and renowned cinematographer Darius Khondji (EvitaBardoAmourEddington).

The restoration—funded by the Golden Globe Foundation—was carried out by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project at L’Immagine Ritrovata in collaboration with Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and The Criterion Collection. The film received a standing ovation following its world premiere, with the audience’s emotional response reaffirming the enduring impact of Ray’s work and the timeless power of his storytelling.

The Golden Globe Foundation is proud to have supported this important restoration and remains committed to preserving global film heritage for future generations.
