Spotlight on Impact: The 2025 Sundance Screenwriters Lab

Golden Globe Foundation

This January, the Golden Globe Foundation proudly supported the Sundance Institute’s Screenwriters Lab—an intimate and immersive weeklong experience held at the Sundance Resort just before the Festival. Led by Artistic Directors Scott Frank and Jessie Nelson, the Lab brought together emerging screenwriters and accomplished advisors for a transformative period of deep creative work.

Set against the backdrop of a challenging time for the Los Angeles creative community following the devastating wildfires, this year’s Lab served as a healing space—one grounded in generosity, collaboration, and a shared belief in the power of storytelling. Fellows and advisors engaged in honest, often vulnerable conversations, exploring the most personal and distinctive aspects of their scripts. The program emphasized not only craft, but also the courage it takes to tell a meaningful story.

Highlights included the session “From the Get Go: Announcing Clear Intention,” where advisors screened clips to spark conversation around narrative choices and storytelling clarity. Another special moment came with a visit from director Walter Salles, whose second feature Central Station was supported by Sundance. Salles joined the group for a screening and conversation about his Oscar-winning film I’m Still Here, offering invaluable insights into his creative process.

As one fellow put it, “Can you imagine what would have happened to my film if I hadn’t been able to participate in the Lab?” Thanks to the Golden Globe Foundation’s continued investment in bold voices and visionary storytelling, these filmmakers now move forward with renewed inspiration—and a powerful network behind them.
