About HUIT PIASTRES ET DEMIE!
During the Great Depression shrimp prices spiraled down. Fishermen began to organize, families chose sides, and a war resulted. The all-Cajun cast recreate the fighting that took place during the tumultuous Shrimp War of 1938. This thrilling film – though made on a tiny scale – is reminiscent of the verisimilitude captured by Victor Fleming in his 1937 film, Captains Courageous.
About LA FIEVRE JAUNE
It is 1897 and Louisiana is plagued by a devastating epidemic of yellow fever. Families are being separated and quarantined. Will their loved ones survive? This was the same question people asked themselves throughout America during the Covid-19 pandemic. Glen used an all-Cajun cast — mostly non-professionals — to make this memorable dramatic film.
About the Restoration of Glen Pitre’s Cajun-language Films
Once we got news of the Golden Globe Foundation grant to restore these two films, Glen removed the original picture elements from the Louisiana State Archive and shipped them to Matt Hoffman at IndieCollect for inspection. The negatives were scanned in 6.5K by Jack Rizzo at Metropolis using his Lasergraphics scanner. Eva Yuma handled editorial conform and stabilization. Senior colorist Oskar Miarka (below right) did the color grading for both films in close consultation with Glen (below left).
The sound elements were restored by Nick Bergh at Endpoint Audio. Glen — who is a native Cajun speaker — is creating new subtitles for both films as I write this. The deadline for delivery is fast approaching, but Cameron Haffner — our trusty director of restoration services — assures us we will make the date.
