Professional Training & Mentoring

Writers Guild Foundation, Veterans Writing Project

The Writers’ Guild Foundation’s (WGF) mission is to preserve and promote the history and craft of writing for the screen.

“We’re dedicated to engaging, educating, and inspiring emerging writers—especially those belonging to under-served populations—and to preserving the rich history of writing in Hollywood for future generations.”

The WGF has three primary activities:

● The Shavelson-Webb Library and Archive provides a quiet space for anyone—not just WGA members—to read scripts, consult with our librarians, and write. It is free to visit and home to more than 50,000 items. Our librarians also provide a variety of online resources like blog posts on script formatting to support writers who cannot physically visit. The Library often serves as a meeting place for VWP activities.

● Our Public Events provide writers, students, and film and television fans access to a variety of panels, workshops, seminars, Q&As, and other educational events featuring top screenwriting talent. Most of these events are free to attend and take place both virtually and in-person.

● Our Community Programs support the elevation of emerging writers. The VWP and Writers’ Access Support Staff Training Program are workforce development programs for both veterans and writers from historically underrepresented backgrounds (BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled, over the age of 50, etc.), respectively, that provide participants the tools and skills needed for meaningful employment opportunities. Our Volunteer & Mentorship and Visiting Writers programs pair schools, universities, and other nonprofits with WGA-enrolled writers for guest speaking, mentorship, and other opportunities for academic enrichment. The VWP is our longest-running community program.”
