A Place Called Home: Lights, Camera, Transformation in South LA

A Place Called Home witnessed a profound transformation this past summer as a dozen youth from South LA evolved from shy beginners to confident filmmakers during our intensive six-week film program, BeKind Rewind. Under Digital Media Specialist Jahcobie Cosom’s expert guidance, these young creators discovered their artistic voices through an immersive summer filmmaking journey that began with an inspirational visit to a local film festival and culminated in their production of two short films, Money Up and Breaking Point. Students mastered every aspect of the filmmaking process from script writing, acting, directing, and filming. Professional acting coaching on set elevated their creative vision and technical execution.

A Place Called Home debuted the films at our Moondance Film Festival, where 120 attendees responded with enthusiastic applause, providing students with undeniable validation of their creative talents. This success has expanded beyond our community, with Money Up selected for screening at the Youth Diversity Film Festival on April 5, 2025, where nine of our young filmmakers will proudly represent A Place Called Home.

Many of the students have continued their education in our digital media programming and are now seriously exploring careers in film production, graphic design, and animation after graduation. Over the past year, A Place Called Home has reached over 200 youth in our digital media program through filmmaking, animation, graphic design, and photography.
