Deaf West Theatre

Since 1991, Deaf West Theatre (DWT) has engaged artists and audiences in theater and multimedia experiences inspired by Deaf culture and the expressive power of Sign Language. Committed to innovation, collaboration and training, Deaf West Theatre is an artistic bridge between Deaf and hearing worlds.

Presented in both American Sign Language and voice, DWT’s productions are designed to be equally accessible by Deaf and hearing audiences.  Its work consists of reimagined classics and contemporary plays, newly commissioned works, comedy, drama, multimedia projects and its signature brand of Sign Language musicals. DWT produces two projects per year for the LA and NY stages and has adopted a co-production model in collaboration with regional theaters and commercial producers.

Other activities include educational outreach programs serving local deaf youth, advocacy and consultation throughout the entertainment industry to support employment of deaf individuals, inclusion and accessibility for all artists and audiences, and training and career support for deaf artists. DWT reaches tens of thousands of audience members, serves hundreds of students, and provides employment for more than 100 deaf creatives each year. In 2024, DWT reached an in-person audience of 50,000 and a digital audience of one million through its social channels.
