The 63rd New York Film Festival will feature Satyajit Ray’s Days and Nights in the Forest (Aranyer Din Ratri), newly restored in 4K with support from the Golden Globe Foundation. Screenings will take place on Sunday, September 28 at 11:45 AM, Thursday, October 2 at 3:15 PM, and Saturday, October 4 at 3:15 PM at Lincoln Center.
A Rediscovered Masterwork
First released in 1970, Days and Nights in the Forest is among Ray’s most acclaimed achievements—an intimate and layered exploration of four friends seeking escape from daily life, only to encounter profound questions of class, gender, and self-understanding.
The film has been praised as a landmark of Indian and world cinema, often compared to the contemporaneous works of John Cassavetes, though Ray’s perspective remains uniquely his own.
The Restoration
This restoration was presented by The Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project at L’Immagine Ritrovata in collaboration with Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection. It was funded by the Golden Globe Foundation, with special thanks to Wes Anderson and Sandip Ray. The work was completed from the original camera and sound negative preserved by Purnima Dutta and the magnetic track preserved at the BFI National Archive.
Continuing Its Festival Journey
Following acclaimed screenings at Cannes and the Toronto International Film Festival, the film’s inclusion at NYFF continues its journey across major festivals, giving audiences around the world the opportunity to experience one of Satyajit Ray’s most enduring works in a stunning new restoration.
